As a resident of the Rio Grande Valley, I have for many years and hundreds of times passed by Sarita and glanced over to the buildings that dot the horizon on the west side of Highway 77, and wondered what it must be like to live in a community such as Sarita.  Five years ago, as an employee of the Region 2 Education Service Center I had the privilege to visit the school district on official school business. I took some time to drive down the streets and get to see up-close what an amazing community it is.  I felt like I had stepped back into my childhood days, everything was so nostalgic, and now, I get the opportunity to serve the community as Superintendent. 

I was born and raised in a the small community of Santa Rosa so I can relate to the concept of knowing all your neighbors and all the students with whom I went to school.  Upon graduating from Santa Rosa High School I enrolled at Texas A&I University, Kingsville, completing my studies with a student teaching assignment at Riviera Elementary.  Attending school here helped me to become familiar with the area. I can relate to the pride and joy that people have living in this area.  After completing my student teaching assignment I began my teaching career at La Feria ISD, six miles south of my hometown.  As an elementary school teacher I moved up the ranks becoming an assistant principal and then principal in La Feria. 

After 25 years in La Feria I had the opportunity to serve my hometown as Superintendent, where I remained for 2 years.  After Santa Rosa I moved to another small district, San Perlita, and was employed for two years before moving to Brownsville.  I was assigned as Assistant Superintendent in various capacities.  My last five years have been here in the coastal bend area where I was employed by Region 2 Education Service Center serving as the field service representative reaching out to all the school districts in the Region 2 service area.   

My parents instilled in me the importance of a good education, “hijo, an education will be with you forever, no one can take that away”.  As the youngest of nine children I saw my family struggle to make ends meet.  Yes, a good education is the great equalizer. These are the same philosophies that I try to instill in my own three children.  As a proud grandfather it is now time to educate the grandchildren, both of them and others to come.  As my wife of 43 years and I see our children and grandchildren grow we try to teach them these same ideals.  The same principles, values, morals that I hope to impress upon the children at Sarita Elementary. 

For me it is a great honor to be given this opportunity to serve and teach the children of this community.  I look forward to spending time with them. I am thankful for the warm welcome that I have received from the community and I look forward to serving them all.
